“Before I Self Destruct” is 50 Cent’s 4th studio album and will be released on 23 November 2009

The album has been put back for release on several occasions. It was said that this album should have been released at the time of “Curtis” ( album 2007) however “Curtis” was released instead, going head to head with Kanye West’s offering “Graduation” which out sold “Curtis”. In contrast to Curtis, 50 Cent explained that fans “should not expect to see guest appearances like you saw on Curtis”.

50 Cent told MTV that he named the album Before I Self Destruct because “it could potentially happen.” 50 Cent described the album as “darker” and more “aggressive” than his previous album and stated, “hands down, [it] will be the best record of that time period”.

Producers on the album include Dr Dre, Rich Harrison, Sha Money XL, Ty-Fyffe and Play N Skillz.

The album comprises of 16 tracks and 3 bonus tracks are included with downloads from iTunes.

This album really sees’s 50 going back to the hardcore gangster sound. He said in an interview with MTV “[Not particularly this song, but the entire project] – I meant for it to be a little harder and what I fell in love with about hip-hop and within hip-hop, I accomplished it. Before I Self Destruct is absolutely harder than Get Rich or Die Trying’ or other projects in between. The Massacre had some real aggressive content on it, but there were other things I wanted to do, like ‘Ryder Music,’ ‘Baltimore Love Thing,’ ‘Build You Up,’ featuring Jamie Foxx. This project, I kept all of those things out of it. I just made it what I wanted it to be. This album is my album right now. It’s like the prequel to Get Rich — the things I missed on that project.”

“I didn’t do a lot of collaborating,” 50 revealed. “I wrote the record and I had so much time to write so many ideas that I wanted to make sure people heard me…I had the time to make it what I wanted. Me and [Eminem] doing the ‘Psycho’ joint is crazy on the record. I did this joint with R. Kelly; it’s actually a bonus because its track 16 on the joint…R.Kelly was the last one [besides Ne-Yo]. [Me and Dre,] we did four joints on this album. I had more time with Dre on this record than the other one…” (Shade 45).

Looking at other reviews circulating at the moment, people are giving this album a hard time. These are probably the guys who used to love In da Club and think that’s what hip hop is all about. I think 50 and the producers have done a great job in limiting the annoying pop element that seems to inflict itself on every hip hop and R&B album and have made this an album that serious hip hop fans can enjoy.

I saw someone say that there is no stand out track that will do particularly well – but I think that the collaboration with Ne-Yo on Baby By Me will be a big commercial success. Others have slated his take on Gangster’s Delight – which samples Rappers Delight – come on its not THAT bad! Day Went By has a real soulful vibe while still retaining that gritty street feeling. Death To Enimies is going for the real hardcore sound. So Disrespectful is a classic hip hop banger.

Psycho features vocals from Eminem and has a really catchy hook but it’s Eminem who really steals the show on this track. Hold Me Down see’s 50’s softer side – well as soft as he can be – with him almost singing the chorus! Crime Wave is a really dirty beat – a real hard track that you can’t help but bob your head to. Stretch has got amazing rhythm and vocals from 50. Strong Enough has also got some soulful sampling going on in the background – but this track is more of a grower for me.

Gangsta’s Delight as said before is a take on the classic Rapper’s Delight with a hard beat – hasn’t got the sparkle of the original but not offensive to the ears as some reviewers had stated. I Got Swag also sees a little sing/rap on the hook he’s no Marvin Gaye but still! It’s Baby By Me that is the absolute stand out track on this album. The other tracks up to this point kind of sound similar – but this really is the jewel in the crown with gorgeous vocals from Ne-Yo and a great vocal performance from 50.The album really sparkles from here. Do You Think About Me is really melodic and tranquil a real chill out track – thought it was going to be a rip off of Daz Dillinger’s Do You Think About Me (which sampled Tupac’s Keep Ya Head Up). I was really pleasantly surprised and this holds as much weight as Baby By Me – if not more with the soulful male vocals on the hook – this is my personal favorite from the album. Another harder track here with some more sing/rap from 50 Ok You’re Right. Could’ve Been You feat R Kelly is a real wind-down from the beginning of this album which started to gritty and hard vocals are what you would expect from Kelly’ this needs to be ‘ which started gritty and hard. Vocals are what you would expect from Kelly.’
As well as music album, along with the release is a 90 minute film starring 50 Cent or Curtis Jackson as it so states and is his directorial debut. The film is a coming of age story about an inner city youth raised by a hardworking single mother. When his dream of becoming a basketball player fails to materialize after his mother is tragically gunned down, Clarence (played by Jackson) is consumed by revenge and takes up a life of crime in order to support his younger brother. He said
“Because I had additional time, I wrote, produced and directed my own film, ‘Before I Self Destruct’ and it’ll actually be within the album’s packaging, so when you buy the record, you’ll get the film that I wrote.”

Bashy – Catch Me If You Can

Hang tight Dionne in HMV for screw-facing me when I asked her to take a picture of me with the CD :S !!

Hang tight Dionne in HMV for screw-facing me when I asked her to take a picture of me with the CD :S !!

Well well well. June the 1st is among us. Admittedly, out of the 3 CD’s that were being released today, Wiley’s was the one I wanted to get 1st. But that’s not coming out until the 8th and I ain’t waiting around !!

Bashy’s name has been on the lips of millions of people, from Tim Westwood to Gordon Brown, all over England and even across Europe. Other than the um-matchable message he belted out on “Black Boys”, Bashy was the only artist to make a Grime hit the national charts in 2008 with “Kidulthood 2 Adulthood”.

The CD opens up with an epic message, various different people bigging up Bashy for all the work he’s done, creating history with “Black Boys” and inspiring thousands. “Before Before” is a genius piece of work, a celebration of all the things he grew up with including legendary Dizzee Rascal & D Double E Bars, classic TV Shows like Desmonds (Wow, that ain’t been on for AGES) and the real McCoy plus a remembrance of general life. The promise of “Who Want’s To Be A Millionaire” is let down slightly by Toddla T’s headache providing beat. “She’s A Gangster” gets more and more catchy with each play. The hook is just off this planet and Bashy does alot on the verses.

The 1st feature comes in the form of mega multi-platinum album selling group N Dubz on “Travel The World”. The song is quite good, Dappy’s hook is what really makes it though. Only a brave man would attempt to count the amount of Countries/Cities mentioned on this tune !!! Next up we got “Change”. This is probably the deepest tune I’ve heard in a while, Naughty Boy’s productions are actually sick ! Bashy must have cried on the page when writing on this one !!

“Copy Cat” can boast itself to be one of the CD’s best tunes. Bashy absolutly kills it !! I would love to see a video for this one. “OH MY GOSHH” - still floating about in my brain !! “Ransom” is cleverly constructed, it’s basically a script rolled into some rhymes, but it all sounds a little too “forced”. “Living My Dream” is another deep one, not as deep as “Change” but gets the meassge across all the same. Sirach Charles’ vocals on the chorus are smoooth ! “Life” is definatly not one of my favourite tunes. The vocals don’t really go with Toddla T’s yet again head hurting beat, although Bashy’s long going flow saves it a little bit along with the noice hook.

“Your Wish Is My Command” is actually a banger, I think Myx Quest’s beat is sampled form an 80’s tune, not 100% though. H-Boogie’s vocals on the chorus are absolutly superb and Bashy does well to saty ahead of his guest on this track !!! “We Can Do Anything” has been a favourite of mine for a very long time and this version feature UK pop-sensation Jamelia (Please, please do a video, just so I can see her :D ). The tune is emotional, yet, comes with a positive and happy vibe. “Sorry” didn’t realy get too much play . I’m like a lost little child after hearing this. Then switching on “Slags” and various other semi-degrading taunts towards Women. It’s a nice little tune noe the less, just very much not a legacy setter.

“What About Me” is quite deep. I’m sure I recognise the beat from somewhere but all the same, Bashy spills his thoughts all over it. “Day Before I Die” is one to be skipped to be honest. The chorus is frankly embaressing when you consider all the other bits we’ve seen on the album so far. Bashy does try hard to save it, but, I couldn;t get into it…

The bonus tracks. Well…”Kidulthood 2 Adulthood” made the UK’s top 100. Unreal. The Maniac production is pukka, the way Bashy keeps up with the beat is amazing and the fact this song charted is PHENOMENAL. “Black Boys” is that tune. The one you have on repeat. It’s gonna be around for years. And let me just add, as a white guy, the tune ain’t racist. Come off that talk !!!

This CD is not one to be slept on. Rating wise….tough one…it’s gott be a 4/5 for me !

Peace ;)

Eminem – Relapse

// May 29th, 2009 // No Comments » // Music Reviews

Its that time....

It's that time....

It’s been 5 years since I un-wrapped my copy of Eminem’s “Encore”. I absolutely loved that album and that same feeling of nostalgia came back to me as I opened up that return CD, “Relapse”. But was I gonna feel the same this time around ?

The 1st thing I’ll cover is the message. Lying behind the various light-hearted Dr Dre beats and collection of ridiculous accents used by Em is something dark and sinister. “Insane” is a prime example of that. There were some quite frankly disturbing moments during that song. About how his step father raped him and the babysitter made him watch porn. Them sick-like moments are continued through “Medicine Ball”  & “3AM”, neither of which I really feel.

The whole serious message issue is like piss in the wind when you listen to “Bagpipes From Baghdad” & “We Made You”. The first of those containing some harsh words for Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon “i aint playing no fuckin more, nick cannon you prick i wish you luck with the fuckin whore every minute there’s a sucker born” Cannon done not-so-well with his reply, resorting to them playground cusses: Slim Lamey etc etc. We Made You did appeal to me at 1st, but it’s not hard to send for the likes of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan & Kim Kardashian these days. A lot of clowning around is instrumental in ruining this album.

The old 8-mile style emotional tunes are not too far from reach. “Beautiful” is 6 and a half minutes of Slim at his very best, describing the emotions going through his head and why he has been missing for the past 5 years. The same can be found on “Deja Vu” & “Underground” and for those who love the Slim Shady who slags his mother off than “My Mom” is you.

Overall, there are loads of bits on this album that make you want to cheer and shout “Yes, Shady is back”. But there are more points that make you want to hit skip. “Crack A Bottle” could almost be single handedly blamed for the CD’s failure along with “Must Be The Ganja”, “3AM” & “Hello”. Get rid of them and you have an almost decent CD.

Out of 10 ?? Hmmm…gotta be a 5 I’m afraid.
